Our dojo is located in the gymnasium of Gander Academy elementary school on Frasier Rd. We are new to the area as our club was formed in January of 2004. At the moemnt we have about 12 members but we hope to increase that number significantly in the near future.
Chikara stands for power or strength. We teach three principals and those are "Focus, Discipline and Respect". If you practice Judo you must follow these three principals at all times.

Judo was developed in Japan by Dr. Jigaro Kano, a physical education professor teaching at Tokyo University, in the mid 1800's. Dr. Kano took the ancient combat art of Jui-Jitsu and made it into a gentler form of combat, this he called Judo. Over the years Judo has developed into a sport and is not taught as a combat art at all, but it can certainly be used for self defense. Judo can be enjoyed by anyone male or female from 6 to 60. It offers physical fitness, self discipline, self defense. It helps you develop self respect and self confidence. Judo uses a belt grading system and was the first martial art to implement this type of system. Our belt system ranges from white belt to black belt with kids under the age of 13 using a half belt ranking system. The colors go from white/yellow, yellow/orange, orange green and green/ blue. All techniques and throws and taught in Japanese, this way if the student travels to another club in another country he or she will understand what the techniques are. Beside that the kids have fun learning a little bit of a new and different language. Every year we have a number of local, provincial and inter-provincial tournaments. This is a great opportunity for the students to go to new places and meet new people.
